AVERY ROCK LIGHT - Maine

Location: South End of Avery Rock - Machias Bay
Currently Operational: No
Current Use: Destroyed by a storm in 1946
Height: 56 feet
Year Established: 1875

Avery Rock Light was located in the middle of Machias Bay, Maine, and was accessible only by boat. It was established in 1875, and first lit in October of that year. The Avery Rock Light was a white square tower constructed of wood with a tower height of 34 feet. Due to the limited amount of space available on Avery Rock, the wooden lighthouse tower was built on the roof of the lighthouse keeper’s brick house. The light itself was 56 feet above mean high water. The lighthouse was operational until it was destroyed by a storm in 1946 and never replaced.
